Free radical-caused oxidation produces premature aging, degenerative disease, cancer and heart disease. The body needs to be able to repair the oxidative damage that occurs. Free radicals steal components from other cellular molecules, such as fat, protein, or DNA, thereby spreading the damage. This process, called peroxidation, continues in a chain reaction, and entire cells soon become damaged and die. Free radicals essentially attack body cells and tissues, which can lead to the development of health problems, like heart disease, cancer, arthritis and cataracts. Antioxidants help to fight free radicals by rounding them up and converting them to less harmful by-products that are eliminated by the body.
Free radicals damage cells, cause inflammation and vascular damage (which in turn can cause brain dysfunction), muscle and joint pain, and generally poison the body. Free radicals also cause damage which is not specific to M.E., such as aging and cancer. Free radicals are highly reactive forms of oxygen. As your body creates energy at the cellular level, oxygen is metabolized, changing its structure. Free radicals are by-products created as your body’s cells go about their normal business. Although free radicals are nothing more than oxygen molecules, they occur in particularly unstable form.
Free radicals are without question the central players in the aging process. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and fragments of molecules that can damage the body at the cellular level leaving the body susceptible to cancer, heart disease and other degenerative diseases.
Free radicals in the body is a totally natural thing, but can be harmful when the level of free radicals gets out of control. Too many free radicals in the body can lead to cell damage which is what you want to avoid. Free radicals damage lipids, proteins, and DNA (DNA is present in the nucleus of almost every cell, stores all genetic information, and dictates cellular functions). This damage is the root cause of aging. Free radicals damage cells and cell membranes because they “steal” electrons from cell molecules. This change may result in a chain reaction, in which more and more molecules will lose their electrons.
Antioxidants are renowned for the protection they offer us against oxygen damage and free radicals. Free radicals are believed to be partially responsible for the effect of aging (“Mayo Clinic Health Letter”, August 1993). Antioxidants in strawberries are thought to help defend the body against several diseases and conditions, including cancer, heart disease, neurological decline, and diabetes. Data suggests the high antioxidant activity of strawberries may help reduce levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Antioxidants consist of a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that have health enhancing effects for our bodies. Antioxidants work to neutralize free radicals before they do harm to our bodies.
