FAQ: A Weight Loss Plan that Works!

If you have tried everything but have not been able to lose weight
or maintain your success, this program is for you. With the
Medifast plan and the personal support of the counseling staff at TSFL you can achieve weight loss that lasts!

Who is Medifast for?

The Medifast diet plan uses a high-protein food supplement to help
you lose weight faster and more easily than ever before. Medifast
is an especially good choice if you are:

- Overwhelmed because you have a lot of weight to lose.

- Stuck and can’t seem to lose weight on other plans.

- Struggling to lose weight due to medical problems or limited
mobility.

How does it work?

The Medifast plan is based on the principles of a very low-calorie
diet, or VLCD. As the name implies, this type of diet plan (usually
between 500 and 800 calories a day) creates a “caloric deficit”
between the calories you take in and what your body normally burns.
Medifast products are carefully designed to assure adequate levels
of protein while restricting the amount of carbohydrates.
The increased proportion of protein intake cause the body to
maintain a very mild level of ketosis. Combined with the low
caloric intake, this physical state allows rapid weight loss while
preserving muscle tissue.

Fast, consistent weight loss

The Medifast plan brings rapid weight loss, usually between 3 to 5 pounds a week. Most participants feel great, have no hunger and stay highly motivated due the quick results. The variety of flavors as well as hot soups and Medifast supplement
bars make it easy to stay with the plan.

Is it Safe? Absolutely!

Medifast is a high-quality food product primarily made from soy,
along with a significant amount of added vitamins and minerals.
Medifast provides structure and simplicity while meeting all of the
body’s essential needs.
Most people do not experience any medical problems related to being
on the program. In fact, Medifast can safely be used by individuals
with high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, high blood pressure
or adult-onset diabetes, including those who are on insulin.

Who should not use Medifast?

The Medifast program is not recommended for people with the
following:

History of stroke, unstable angina

Juvenile-onset diabetes

Active thrombophlebitis

Recent bleeding peptic ulcer

Pregnant or breast feeding

Steroid need greater than 20 mg. Prednisone/day

Recent psychiatric history or suicide attempt

Heart attack within previous three months

Uncompensated kidney or liver disease

Adjusting medications

Most prescriptions medications will not interfere with a fasting
program. Medifast supplements are actually food, therefore drug
interactions are rare. However, as you lose weight, medication
doses may need to be adjusted. Always contact your doctor before
making changes in any of your medications. Here are a couple of
specific guidelines:

Diabetes medications

Oral diabetes agents – generally, plan to discontinue oral agents
when you begin the fasting program. Monitor blood sugar levels as
instructed by your doctor.

Insulin – if your insulin dose is less than 30 units a day,
Medifast recommends you discontinue it entirely when you begin the
plan. Monitor blood sugar readings twice a day during the early
weeks, then decrease monitoring to two to three times a week. If
you are on more than 30 units a day, you can usually decrease your
dose by half, then reduce it further as your blood-sugar level
drops. Monitor blood sugars as above.

Blood pressure medications

If you are taking blood-pressure medication, you may be able to
decrease your dose or eliminate taking it, at least during the time
you are on Medifast. Watch for any of these symptoms that can
indicate your medication dose needs to be adjusted: feeling tired,
weak or “washed out,” legs feeling rubbery or weak, headaches,
feeling dizzy or light-headed, or becoming more fatigued after
several weeks of feeling great.
